a message from the Rally coordinator... |
Dear Friends,
Thank you very much for your support.
A number of local teams are well advanced with their plans for their
local rally on 27th October.
However a number of local teams have asked me for a framework by
which they can organise their own local rally on 27th October,
modeled on the activities that will take place at Westminster on the same day.
(By the way if you have not yet volunteered to support your local
team and would now like to link up with them, simply send me an
email with your post code and I will certainly put you in touch)
Here are the main features of the Westminster rally that could be
incorporated in your own local rally:
-
Voting slips (I will send you a draft if you need one). If this is revised I will immediately let you know.
-
Ballot boxes - One very large one (12 ft high) with 5 flags on top. Each corner flag represents the make up of our union plus one for your town/county. The 5th flag takes centre stage on the top, is bigger and is the Union Jack. The style of the box is the same as indicated in the t-shirt design. You could have a voting slot in the side of the box or have a smaller box available for voting. The ballot boxes could use the same wording as the t-shirts (which will be available by then from our on-line shop)
-
I do not know the layout of your village/town/city but find a prominent busy public place for your rally. Of course get permission from the police and local authority. Once these details are in place notify all media outlets by contacting known journalists directly.
-
Have your local supporters make up large banners representing your local wards. These ward representatives should have the population number of their ward written on their voting papers. Towards the end of the rally tote up these "symbolic" votes and announce the"result".
-
Welcome the local population to vote. Ask them to volunteer their names and email addresses when giving them a voting paper but this is not a condition to vote.
-
If you can find a good brass band so much the better. The rally is also a celebration of British democracy.
-
Add balloons, stringers, etc
-
Take photographs and good quality video material for immediate distribution to local media outlets. Also do a press release
-
If your planning resources go so far conclude your rally with a local meeting. Cross party/society speakers are essential.
-
Include a march to the rally point if possible.
I hope these guidelines are useful. They do give an accurate picture of what will be happening at Westminster on 27th October for the launch of the "Rolling Thunder" programme of rallies culminating in the national mass pro referendum rally in London in the spring of 2008.
With my best regards
Dr Jonathan Wilson

Tony of Poole |
This is what I am doing in Poole.
If you have any influence on other councils, please ask them to do the same.
Many thanks,
Tony Woodcock
MOTION TO COUNCIL, 24TH JULY
The "Reform Treaty", signed by Tony Blair on 23rd June, is acknowledged publically by the leaders of nearly all our EU partners to be virtually the same as the Constitution Treaty.
France and the Netherlands decisively rejected that Treaty.
The "Reform Treaty" transfers yet more substantive powers from Britain to the EU and further erodes British laws and the British Constitution.
It will reduce the rights and freedoms of the residents of Poole and of the whole nation.
Therefore this Council calls on Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, to abide by the Government's promise to the electorate in the 2005 Labour Party Manifesto, page 84, "We will put the [Constitution Treaty] to the British People in a referendum..."

Hello Jonathan,
There is now a visually prominent banner that links to your site. This will display on every page.
Have added the event (plus link) to our "Whats on?" guide (on the first page, just above the rugby)
Will inform all of my contacts.

My small contribution to the cause is to wear my Referendum T-shirt on a walk along the A34 from Didcot to Newbury next Saturday (28 July). Attached are front and back photos of me with my new T-shirt, taken at the office where I work. Peter there was good enough to take them, and to attach them to an e-mail he sent me. The numbers are still quite small compared to the turnout that will be needed to make any impression on G Brown, but it's a start. If we can get a million people descending on London, then possibly we may get him to change his mind on giving the people a say! I hope so!

Thanks for the newsletter, and for the correspondence below urging the need to raise the profile of the EU Con.
For your information, and for this very purpose, I have prepared a publicity tool which I hope activists can use to this end. It is a reprint of the very successful little booklet (first published for the first EU Con) that sold in thousands, before being 'cut off' due to the results of the French & Dutch referendums.
It has now been updated and completely revised and the title is : WHAT'S IN THE NEW EU CONSTITUTION? QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS - A PLAIN MAN'S GUIDE. This has been printed and is now available.
The objective is threefold - to provide activists, and members of the public with:
1. Information on the new Con, and some of the implications in a short, precise, and readable format (A5) - larger than a leaflet , but smaller that some of the weightier stuff on the Internet and published.
2. It makes the case fully for a referendum in the UK, with up to date facts and information.
3. To do so as cheaply as possible for potential mass circulation -aiming to keep the price to under a £1 maximum, or less if possible. I have it available as a MS Word doc. if you wish to view it - and/or pass it on to others.

Dear Jonathan,
Glad to see we are still on, and am getting support here locally. Bit of news.
I have asked the BBC a question under the Freedom of Information Act, and been allocated a file and promised an answer within 20 days. The question is broadly, how much prime time TV/Radio coverage have you given to the calls for an EU referendum as promised at the last Election by NuLab, and who has been given on air debating time, pro and con, and how much to each! Should be an interesting whitewash of an answer, but I will be able to compare it with other topics.
It seems to me that the transfer of power and sovereignty to foreign nationals should be a major topic (it was last time when Hitler wanted said powers) and come under the BBC's remit to 'Educate and Inform'.
DT's site is getting a bit chocked, but good to see support.
Yours,
Simon Butcher.

Molly and Maurice Bennett of Eastleigh |
Hello, We are a group of UKIP members from Eastleigh in Hampshire who are definitely supporting this rally. Could we offer a suggestion?
On the last petition for a referendum we stood in Southampton town centre, the people were lining up to sign our petition!. It was very successful and we collected hundreds of signatures (from all political persuasions) such was the strength of feeling then, we believe that feeling is even stronger now!
After the NO vote from France and the Netherlands, people are looking for a target to 'focus' their discontent and anger at the way successive governments have brushed aside their wishes for a democratic vote on the future of our country, they have ignored the feelings of those who fought to protect these freedoms from foreign invaders, they are spitting on the graves of those who gave their lives in the defence of the freedom and democracy that some of our politicians are ready to sell for their 30 pieces of silver.
We would like to know if a petition form has been made up yet as we need to be sure we are all 'singing from the same hymn sheet!' please let us know what progress if any has been made on this ?
Thank you,

Dear Jonathan
I would like to endorse the idea of TONY OF POOLE in requesting county, district and parish councils to pass A MOTION that their council, on behalf of its residents, puts the case for a REFERENDUM ON THE REFORM TREATY.
I have used Tony's wording, suitably amended, and already been advised by our Town councillor to put the motion in writing to the Town Clerk or Mayor at least 8 days before the next full council meeting at the beginning of September, so there is no time to lose.
I now await replies from my County and District councillors.
Best Wishes |
Paul of Derby |
Dear Organisers,
I have been registered with yourselves since very early on and would like to offer my help in relation to putting motions before local councils. I note on your local campaigns section that you report Tony of Poole placed a motion before his council in July. However, I respectfully suggest that this option should be made more clear to those who visit the website.
So, if I were you, I would (if you can) add a link on your front page entitled something like "Motions for Local Cllrs" and if you want, you could quote the following inside that link: "Cllr Paul V. Greenall of West Lancashire District Council, is available to assist you in wording a motion calling for a referendum on the EU Treaty to put before your local council. Cllr Greenall can be contacted at:
cllr.greenall@westlancsdc.gov.uk
I shall be placing a motion before my council at our next meeting in October. I shall keep you informed of the result, but I just think the more local councils we get on our side, the better. But not all local councillors might think of placing a motion before their Full Council. Please let me know what you think.
With thanks Paul.
Cllr. Paul V. Greenall, B.Sc. (Hons.), M.Sc.
Conservative Member for Derby Ward,
West Lancashire District Council. |

Dear Jonathon
Thank you for this: I'm still considering the two dates: its a very difficult choice to my mind.
By the way - concerning images, I suppose you must already have been in contact with many organisations regarding supporting the rally: it may be a good idea for those organisations which are going to formally support it to have their logos on the web site.
Secondly, I am happy to finance to the tune of a few hundred pounds getting a professional designer to do the graphics / layout of the site (I can do the html unless they include this in the price). There are loads of freelances around who will do a good job for that price. Please let me know your thoughts.
My very best regards,
Andrew |
Roger Panton of Slough |
Hi Everyone
Just to introduce myself, I am Roger Panton and have sort of set up a website forthe SL post code areas. If you like we can use this for our bit of the campaign. If we can get enough peoplewe can create sub bits to make our lives easier and hopefully more effective.Would you like a get together as suggested.
If you want to get a login for this website go to www.activityforum.co.uk and usethe e-mail address I have used to send this e-mail as the lost password entry andthe system will generate you a password and then you can communicate. As far as it stands we can either use this site or any other we might create itsjust that I have set this up quickly.

Jonathan,
Did I mention the excellent response when I walked from Didcot to Newbury on the A34 in my BRING ON A REFERENDUM T-shirt? Lots of beeping as cars went by at great speed. I was walking south, so on the west side of the A road, facing northbound traffic. The T-shirt had lettering on both front and back, so there was some beeping from the other side (southbound) also. I walked about 15 miles and it took about 5 hours.
I usually go for country walks on the weekends, but the Referendum is so important that I thought the road walk would be better. This showed me that the public is very strongly behind the issue. I kept thinking as I was walking how people in their cars/buses would have started talking to each other about the issue. The person sitting next to someone might not have even heard of the issue, but get the person next to them talking about it and the public awareness just grows and grows!!
I was wondering if we couldn't somehow form a group of people for walking A roads or busy B roads wearing clothing that put the point across. I estimate that about 30,000 cars/trucks/buses passed me on Saturday, so it's a great way to get the word out and public awareness up!!
If I knew that someone genuinely would wear a T-shirt and walk a main road with it, I would pay for the T-shirt. That's how strongly I feel about this matter. The people have to be given a say on their future!!!!
Phil
P.S. I have a new T-shirt on order with the words: GIVE US A REFERENDUM ON THE E.U. CONSTITUTION

Graham from Cumbria |
Hello Dr Wilson,
There is to be a meeting in Kendal on Thursday 20th September at 7.30 p.m. in the Town Hall. The org running the meeting is a group called Forward in Europe. It is intended to have two speakers for and two against the EU with a vote taken at the end of the debate. As long as this does not clash with any plans, you might have some contacts up here who might (should) attend. I have contacted as many as possible that I know in the area but are you able to filter from your list those who live fairly close to the event e.g. North Lancs and Cumbria.
I happen to know of the man running the event. If you are too busy then not to worry we will raise both hands!!
Kindest regards
Geoff Graham Greystoke Cumbria |
Elizabeth Curzon-Howe of Exeter |
Dear Jonathan,
Just a brief note. In reference to the Excel schedule you forwarded with the names of the Exeter contacts, are you able to forward another version with the headings under which everyone was listed, because without the headings I am not sure what all the figures mean? Although I am yet to meet my fellow Exeter capaigners, an E-mail to them all will follow this one to you, I am working on some headline Flyers, which can be put up in Post Offices and local shops etc. They will vary in size because that is what will be required at the different outlets. Once I have created a couple may I send them to you for your comments? Your views will be much appreciated and please be as critical as you like. Best wishes, Yours sincerely, Elizabeth Curzon-Howe (Mrs) UKIP Tiverton Branch Tel: 01392-860597
Eds. Note: With regard to the last few enigmatic columns on the Excel spreadsheet the following applies
The columns with "1" or "0" reflect the choices of supporters with regard to local volunteering, rally day volunteering and speaker volunteering.
"1" = "yes" and "0" = "no" . The last column of figures is the supporter's unique registration number.
If you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact me.
With best regards
Jonathan |
Dr Peter Gardner of Oxford |
Hello Everyone,
I gather we have all received a copy of the Excel listing of people in the county who have signed up as rally supporters. Because of that I am posting under "cc" rather than "bcc".
Most of the people on the list already know each other or know of each other but some names are unfamiliar to me. For this initial email can I suggest that we :
- introduce ourselves to each other
- say what each of us is prepared to do to help maximise support for the rally in Oxfordshire
This is me :
I am willing to act as coordinator and to seek publicity in local media. We do not have much time now that the rally is scheduled for the end of October so mass publicity is essential.
Most of you know me as the UKIP coordinator for Oxfordshire and a long-time UKIP activist.
Having said that I would do rally organising work from a strict non-party or cross-party viewpoint. I am not concerned by what party you may or may not support. My details are :
Dr Peter Gardner,
78 St Marys Rd, OX4 1QD (East Oxford)
01865 723561, 07951 660407
work email (in the cc of this email): peter.gardner@silver-software.com
Please note that I am away from home during the week so please use my work email address if you want a quick reply.
I am here at home for the next few hours but then leaving for work tomorrow so please send your response to both my email addresses.
Please consider what you can do to help: I am busy all the time and I cannot do all this on my own. Your help is essential. I look forward to hearing from you and to vastly increasing our numbers in the county. Lets aim for a big "Oxfordshire" banner when we gather in Hyde Park!
Peter. |
